I live in an apartment and am looking into buying a toy dog. Most of the breeds I have looked at (including Poms and Pugs) are either inclined to bite or hard to housetrain. I want to find a toy breed that’s friendly, affectionate, and relatively simple to housebreak. Is that possible? Feel free to report your experience with any particular toy breeds.
There are many Papillons that have earned top obedience awards. But, neither my pug nor my Chihuahua were hard to train. You might check with your local shelter. Many times you will find a small dog already trained, and its worth a shot.
You will find shelter dogs listed on www.petfinder.com, if you are in North America

I have a chihuahua, he has been very simple to train. He is also very affectionate and friendly, even toward strangers. He can get a small nippy, but that is only because my sister doesn’t discourage him when he does that, even though I tell her to.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. You cannot beat them for their small size, sweet temperaments and ease to train. Excellent Luck.

Shelter mutts.
They really do make the best pets.
They’re temperment tested, inexpensive and come with lots of "extras".
If you insist on pure-breed look into Tibetian Spaniels.
Wonderful dogs!

Yorkies tend to be simple to handle and train
They are VERY smart.
They will like up their masters all the time and are friendly with small children and guests.
They come in lots of sizes so you can pick the one you want.
And they like to play and rough house if you want, so it’s not always lap-dog lap-dog time.
But they can do that too. =)

Shih-tzu are nice but they can be stubborn and hard to train sometimes, I have 2 and one was very simple to train (she was potty trained to use a litterbox by the time she was 3 mo. without any accidents outside of it) and one was harder to train (wasn’t completely potty trained til he was 6 mo.) I Like my Shih-tzu though because we also live in an apt. and these dogs don’t shed much, don’t bark much and don’t require lots of exercise.
I reckon if you are looking for something simpler to train though, that probably a toy poodle may be a better bet for you. Poodles are smart and usually very simple to train.

ME AND MY BEAGLE…….what the f**K, you talk a lot for somebody who knows very small,
the kennel club has 7 groups
TOY
hound
utility
pastoral
working
gundog
terrier
you are speaking of teacup runts and yes you are right if you change the "toy" in your answer to "teacup"!!!
toy breeds are the common victims of over breeding and producing runts, this is why some may get a TOY breed mixed up with a TEACUP runt puppy mill dog.
cavaliers as previously mentioned are fantastic BUT some retain the instinct to chase anything like birds or rabbits etc.
but are simple to train and really delight in being trained, lovely lap dogs, like their walks, simple to house train,
whatever breed you choose you must buy from a excellent breeder, then these problems of aggression etc are only a very small risk and will usually be due to lack of discipline and training.
