i have a 6 year old, 4 lb female Yorkie and am tired of paying $40 in fees and tips to a groomer. i have no real reference for how she looks as long as she is comfortable and so usually ask for a "puppy cut".

i have decided i can do this myself, but am looking at a sea of equipment. From what i have read, i have almost decided on an Oster 78004-011 Powermax 2-Speed Clipper (at approx $130). They come with a #10 blade, which i understand is mostly for the shortest part of the cut (faces, for instance). If i want to leave 3/4 to an inch of fir, i am assuming i will need another blade size for her body and am drowning in information.

One recommendation i saw said the combs are really not that effective, to use "ceramic blades" (?) for the correct length. i am assuming this clipper does have interchangeable blade capability.

Any recommendations as to blade size vs combs or experience with this clipper and particularly for Yorkies?

Thanks…

Blades do clip smoother & better thru the hair than snap on combs. There is a 3/4 blade available though it is difficult to use on such a small dog as it is quite large & would still need scissoring for dog to look even. For your purpose it isn’t going to make much difference between ceramic or steel ones. Both get hot quickly so you will need coolant & spare blades. If you look on a site like petedge.com it lists all the available blades with the lengths they leave right next to blade number. Don’t forget all the other things like nail clippers, shampoo, brushes/combs, hemostats for removing ear hair as groomers do a lot for the price.
