2 Vulnerable Native Breeds Rare Dogs BBC Country FileBroadcast on the BBC 1 Country File show on Sunday 24th February at 11am was this piece on “rare” British and Irish breeds of dog, all of which are officially listed by the UK Kennel Club as “Vulnerable” because of their very low numbers. For example did you know that in 2007 there were just 36 Glen of Imaal Terriers born in the UK? Or just 37 Skye Terriers, a breed made famous by Greyfriars Bobby? Or just 41 Otterhounds, a breed which came over with William the Conquer and is one of our most ancient breeds? In all 15 of our rarest breeds were assembled for the BBC to film and these breeds were: (2007 Puppy totals in Brackets)
Glen of Imaal Terrier (36)
Skye Terrier (37)
Otterhound (41)
Sussex Spaniel (61)
Smooth Collie (63)
Sealyham Terrier (65)
Field Spaniel (67)
Welsh Corgi (Cardigan)(68)
Irish Red & White Setter (93)
Manchester Terrier (113)
Dandie Dinmont Terrier (124)
Norwich Terrier (128)
Lancashire Heeler (146)
Irish Water Spaniel (162)
Clumber Spaniel (223)
To put these numbers in perspective, in 2007 the Kennel Club registered over 45,000 Labradors!

The Countryfile program set out to highlight the plight these breeds find them selves in. The item was filmed at Cotswold Farm Park, near Cheltenham on Tuesday 12th February 2008 on a beautiful sunny winter’s day and as the farm is famed for its many rare breeds of livestock it was the perfect venue. The BBC presenter for the item is Miriam O’Reilly, whose credits include Farming Today, Costing the Earth, File on 4 and is a Country File regular. Two breeds get to be specially featured, Irish Water Spaniels retrieving from a lake and Glen of Imaal Terriers doing some rat work in a barn.

By the way – please don’t be put off by the claim that puppies from these breeds cost One Thousand pounds each – this in NOT the case. Most of these breeds cost no more than any other pedigree puppy, about £450 – £600, about the same as a pedigree Labrador for example!

If you have one of these very precious breeds, please post a comment and give this item a rating.
Thanks,
Paul Keevil

Im fed up with my 9 to 5 office job. I would like to learn a new career of dog grooming probably from home. Has anyone done any courses for this, is it better to attend a course or work from courses offered on CD. The course costs are quite high I see does anyone know the amount I need to outlay for basic equipment etc. I would have to take into account shipping costs as I live outside of the EC and you cant even get a dog muzzle in this Country let alone Grooming Equipment. They only have the odd pedigree in my Country really but the English do adopt strays and Im sure there is the need for this service and I dont know anyone else doing it here so I wouldnt have to be a MASTER at the craft if you understanding my meaning.
Addition
If anyone is reading this in Southern Cyprus please can they supply me with telephone or emails of Dog Beauty Parlours where I might be able to have hands on experience. Preferably close to Nicosia.

Scruffy Pups
Best Pet Grooming Course
What this course aims to do is to give a basic understanding and a rounded view of the dog grooming business.

Beginning with basic bathing and handling. Culminating with the student being able to bath, dry, trim and finish a dog to salon standard in an allotted time.

The theory aspect is completed by the student at home and is required in order to complete the course.

At present there are no officially recognised grooming qualifications available in Ireland. This course gives you a solid base on which to build and continue towards City and Guild Exams.

A years membership to the Irish Professional Dog Groomers Association {worth €60} is included in the course fee. The association is great for getting to know other Groomers, learning new techniques and keeping up with style changes.

The course offered is five weeks in duration, with a working week of Tuesday to Friday.

The Practical side aims to cover :

Correct Handling Procedures
Bathing Techniques
Drying Methods
Dematting and Brushing
Clipper Work
Basic Scissoring
Equipment Care and Maintence

The Theory side aims to cover :

Confidence dealing with clients
Main infectious Dog Diseases
Basic Anatomy
Parasites
Equipment
Breeds
Trimming Lines
Correct Coat Dressing
Hazards to groomers
1st Aid in the grooming salon

The aim of this course is to offer the aspiring groomer an idea of what is ahead. The basic skills needed to either start their own grooming salon, get employment in a salon or to continue further training to specialise in certain areas .

Course Cost

Course is run over 5 weeks – Tuesday to Friday

TOTAL COST : €2,500

(Price includes Beginners Equipment Pack) (View Pack)

and Grooming Manual By Sue Dallas,Joanne Angus & Diana North {Worth €50 }

“This course is based on one to one tuition and is very intensive”

All equipment needed by you to complete the course will be provided . Advice is available on where and what to buy, should you then wish to purchase your own.

It is recommended that a prospective student participates in a trial or “taster day”

This consists of a full day spent in the busy grooming salon.

“Just to make sure it is all you dreamt it would be and that you can tolerate the hairy environment and the “glamour” end of Dog Grooming as a career !” Also it gives us a chance to meet each other and see whether we can work together to help you in your chosen occupation.

There was a local dog breed 100+ years ago that was bred to only have an undercoat, so its fur could be used like wool. (Sheep didn’t exist here) The breed is long extinct, and I’m looking for other breeds with only an undercoat.

A few nowadays have undercoats (not sure about the extinct breed,… not old enough!).
Labs, Huskies, to name a couple.

I recently became the owner of an 18 month old pit bull dog. She is in need of a manicure, and I can’t afford to take her to a groomer. I bought an at-home manicure kit, but the instructions weren’t very informative. They said to be careful about cutting the vein. What vein? How short is too short? I love my dog, and don’t want to hurt her. If anyone can suggest a good website about Dog Grooming or if anyone has any tips–Thanks!

Here’s a site that shows pics of what’s going on, and it will probably explain the process a lot better than I ever could. If you’ve got styptic powder in your manicure kit, keep it handy in case you do accidentally cut her. If you don’t have any, however, you can use regular kitchen flour.

Lastly, if you can shell out about $15, you can always take her to a vet’s office and have a technician demonstrate and talk you through it.

I’ve had some experience grooming my own dogs but want a qualification in dog grooming. A dog grooming diploma or something to help in getting all the info I need to set up my own Dog Grooming business. I live in Chester, UK.
Anyone been on any dog grooming courses they can recommend?
Thanks, Sally

You can do a diploma online and relatively cheaply at the Animal College. Link – http://www.animalcollege.co.uk/dog_grooming.htm

I think you can also be trained in a very hands-on way at a dog grooming parlour. Start contacting some.
